Update

All classes end at 4.15 today. Students are let off to go home by then.

The college is in a state of semi-confusion. Half of the acad block is being shut down and teachers have been ordered to relocate.

Teachers ‘ workdesks will move to the first floor of the RC. Student Services will move to a temporary office in the RC. The Acad 1 moves to the guest bungalow (that’s the head, Mr Zaidi, etc) and so will the exam centre.

The classrooms in the floors affected will officially relocate to 7 new chalets that will be renovated during the short 4 day break. That will include the History and English department, quite a pain I’d imagine for those involved.

Renovations are now underway.

BREAKING NEWS

As of 10.50 am today, the college academic block building has been shut down. All students are ordered to evacuate the area as the cracks that have been appearing are now threatening to put students’ lives at risk. Classes at the acad block have been cancelled.

Further updates to come. But this doesn’t look good.

On other news, VeritasOnline is in the process of being handed over to the new junior committee led by Dominic as the new chief editor. Lack of updates (since August) are very much regretted.

The Aftermath

A-Level and AS-Level results are officially out.

But before that, here’s the scoop on something even more stunning.
The hill directly opposite the guardhouse caught fire at approximately 2pm after lunch. The burning was so bad, the smoke so thick, and the flames so large, that the ashes are now scattered all over college – the wind blowing in our direction didn’t help. The hill is now officially charred, and here’s the evidence:

My clothes so smell of smoke now.

That aside, whether the fire was a good or bad omen depends on what each person’s results were. On that point, I have no idea – the little information that I gathered only reveals that a certain senior History (batch 9) class has scored As – every single one of them.

Welcome (and Welcome Back!)!

To the 9th and 9.5th batch, with their newly acquired status as seniors, we wish you a hearty welcome back to KYUEM!

To the new juniors who have just survived 5 days of induction, we wish you an even heartier welcome! In the words of a certain supersenior ’spy’ sent into the junior batch disguised as one, this batch is one of the most vibrant, outspoken, and quick-thinking groups ever to pass through these hallowed gates of KYUEM, and it’s definitely something to be proud of.

For everyone else, including the teachers and staff, as well as the new arrivals, here’s to another year of fun and enlightenment!

That aside, induction week has been a blast so far. The sounds of egg-dropping have been heard from the deepest recesses of Mr Cranwell’s classroom just this morning, and despite the long nights and incredulously early mornings, the juniors have managed to find the energy in them to keep going, to keep smiling, and keep…circling seniors they encounter along the way to request for signatures.

(Personally I feel like a signature-churning machine now. Grin.)

The peak of induction, of course, is Samurai tomorrow night…which will be very very interesting indeed. :D

Awards Day 2007

The senior Graduands showed up in corporate black and white blazers; their best attire. The stage was set, the cameras rolling (Astro was present!), and the crowd gave the procession of students and staff a standing ovation as they entered the Great Hall at 10.10 am.

This is it.

The event kicked off with Mr Small delivering his welcome address, in which he rattled off in near-flawless BM (except for the slight English accent) before reverting back to English in his usual, humourous way, and poignantly touched on his departure and retirement at the end of this semester. There were many things he said that the students took careful note of, and at last, at the end of it, he introduced us to Mr John Horsfall (who had just arrived from London), who would take over the position of Headmaster of KYUEM in Mr Small’s place.

Mr Small, we will miss you.

The guest of honour, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, Chairman of the KYUEM Board of Trustees, took the rostrum next and spoke at length about his first major function as the Chairman – he had only been recently appointed, and certainly looked forward to helming the development of KYUEM in the years to come.

Then, the real action began with the presentation of awards:

    On Loss…and Moving On

The seniors are leaving on the 16th – well, some of them, at least. And there has been some opinion that the going-away process this time round will be much more disjointed than it has been for the past few years. Before we know it, some will have already gone the day after the final Econs paper, without leaving us a chance to say a proper goodbye, or have a proper farewell in the form of a whirlwind of a week of chatting, laughing, reminiscing…

The seniors are leaving on the 16th. That is, in two weeks time, there will be no more source of fun and chatter for the juniors, no place to hang onto in times of need or when more experienced advice is sought. There will be empty tables in the Dining Hall where they once sat. There won’t be as many familiar faces seen loitering around the college grounds as late as 11pm, or of people (and couples) studying feverishly in open classrooms at night.

The seniors are leaving. In two weeks time, us, the juniors will take their places. And when term reopens, we will assume the responsibilities and seniority that have been passed on to us. Will we be able to fill those voids in the manner they want us to? Only time can tell.

Until then, goodbye, the 8th batch, and may there be a bright future ahead of each and every one of you.

    We will miss you.
